Merzbow is a Vegan /Straight Edge Noise project of Masami Akita.

Born in 1956 in Tokyo. Akita studied painting and art theory at the Art Section of the Tamagawa University in Tokyo. While at university, he became interested in the ideas of dada and surrealism. He played in several rock improvisation bands in the late 1970s but he gradually withdrew himself from the rock scene and began experimenting in his basement with broken tape recorders and feedback before founding his own noise music and starting a project Merzbow in 1981. He has recorded over 400 albums and performed concert/sound installations throughout the world. He also played at contemporary art events such as Westbunt Biennale in Shanghai (2013), Yokohama Triennale (2001), Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art (2004) among many others.

Maurizio Bianchi (1955, Italy) is one of the pioneers of industrial music. His first music releases were under the banner of Sacher-Pelz in 1979. Since 1980 he works under his own name, sometimes abbreviated to MB, gaining a large group of followers and enthusiasts. His first active music period was from 1979-1983, after which he became a Jehova Witness and declared “The end is very near, and we have a very short time to recognize our mistakes and to redeem ourselves… I stopped doing music, and now my life is going towards its full awareness”. After a long hiatus he started making music again in 1998.

Gene-X was originally self released by MB on cassette in 1982.
This is the first vinyl publication of Gene-X with original artwork by MB.

Instrumentation used: Turntable with loops derived from a vinyl record driven by a needle.
