David Moreno (b. 1957, Los Angeles, CA) is a visual and sound artist who first started recording his audio experiments in 1983 while still in art school at the University of Arizona in Tucson. His early inspiration was found in the experimental Industrial music of the late 1970s with groups like Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire. These groups, in turn, were inspired by earlier electronic music and musique concrète techniques of avant-garde composers from the 1950s. Moreno continues to use many of these same techniques in his recent recordings. These include sound collages made through the manipulation of field recordings – sounds captured in the environment, acoustic, electronic, and self-made instruments. In essence, music improvised/constructed in the studio.
Moreno has had a lifelong fascination with the material origins of sound – how each substance speaks in its own unique voice. Various metals, wood, glass, paper, salt, soap bubbles, rubber, water, ice have all been used as starting points for audio compositions. These, in turn, have sometimes developed further into sculptural works exploring the visualization of sound through movement both implied and real.
In 1989, Moreno had his first solo exhibition at Feature Inc. in New York City where he continued to show his work throughout the 1990s-2000s. His visual and sound works have been in museum and gallery exhibitions in the US, Mexico, Europe, and Japan – including the 30th São Paulo Biennial, 2012 and Istanbul Biennial, 2013. He has work in both private and public collections, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
