VALERIE ZARS My first ever collaboration on an LP jacket was for, ‘…and the crimson moon whispers goodbye’ by Bonner Kramer. It was a painting I had just completed which was hanging on my studio wall, salon style along with many other pieces. He walked in and said ‘that’s the one’. The original artwork was 24”x24”, acrylic, and sight black matte paint on canvas. For the Astres D’Or special release, I based this new limited edition jacket series on my original painting, taking the image into the alternate worlds that could be explored and created by watercolor merging with gouache on rough black deckled-edge paper. I used metallic washes on these new cover pieces, and worked with the reflective qualities that photographic reproductions or standard printing techniques would never pick up accurately. The original painting was inspired by a snippet from Herbert Huncke’s memoir, in which he talked about one of the most frightening experiences in his life causing him to be filled with an awareness of beauty that nothing else could ever touch. Each work is unique and is signed by myself and Kramer on the reverse, along with the hand numbered edition and LP title.
Personal info: After decades of pursuing my ‘professional’ interests in publishing, photography, photojournalism, architecture and commercial design, I am now ensconced in my own studio working full-time on artwork which runs the gamut from painting, collage, assemblage to writing poetry & prose. Thinking about Art and the inner muse, I ask myself how many doors can I open when everything is walls. How do I fade slowly and more boldly, leaving traces so I can find a way back into that space between dream and disappearance where the ideas and inspirations are waiting, shimmering.. The sky may be a cloud museum, and my core narrative may be a song of decay. I am more than half way through my Time. Vision is like a river. You never see the same color the same way twice. Color never repeats. Life will always be amazing. Observe well, question, notice, abandon rules and respond. Make Art. I will have my first solo show in decades this September at the Revolve project space in Asheville, NC.
