Thierry Müller is a multi-instrumentalist composer, whose Ilitch and Ruth projects are recognized in the independent and international underground scene.
He uses unconventional guitars as well as keyboards and other electronic devices to create unusual textures and sounds. Parisian graphic designer, he began making recordings in the early 1970s using prepared guitars, harmonium and tape recorders as instruments.
Since 1978, his albums with multiple and unclassifiable universes have been described as “Cult” by personalities like Tim Gane, Lee Ranaldo, Steven Stapleton, Edward Ka-Spel,…). He has collaborated on albums or live with, among others, Valentina Fanigliulo (Mushy, Phantom Love), Nick Littlemore (Empire Of The Sun, Pnau), Aaron Moore (Volcano The Bear,…), Jac Berrocal, Quentin Rollet, Pepe Wismeer …

“When Astres d’Or asked me to make a limited original edition, I was very flattered and anxious: What format, what media, what kind of music… And as always, under the nickname Ilitch, what story.
For a very long time I wanted to pay tribute to someone that I loved very much at that time in my life but I always pushed it away because this story had been so passionate and destructive.
So, at this request from Astres d’Or, I told myself that it was now or never.
The choice to use only the guitar seemed obvious to me in order, over the improvisations at the base of this record, to remain in the ‘sentiment brut’ of narration of this past period. Collages were a common passion so they imposed themselves. In each one I tried to express a little part of her. “

Project by Timo van Luijk.

LP (180 Gram)
Original Artwork by Timo van Luijk
Numbered & signed edition of 25 ex.
d’or048

Timo van Luijk born in Finland (1967) and living in the Belgian countryside is an autodidact sound instrumentalist / improvising composer, photographer and printmaker.

Started in the mid 80’s with improvisation and experimental music.

Formed, together with Geert Feytons, the audio-visual experimental music collective Noise-Maker’s Fifes in 1989 using selfmade instruments and field recordings to create complex, surreal audio-visual live happenings, including dance, projected sound and video installations.

Solo music project – Af Ursin – since 1990.

Hand-played improvisations conducted by an attraction for intimate and hermetic atmospheres, psychedelic and mystique spaces, wear of sound and silence.

Music is recorded and produced in the ‘Kulta Saha’ home studio and since 2001 published on LP format through the private ‘La Scie Dorée’ imprint.

Frequent collaborations with ao Andrew Chalk (Elodie, Mirror), Christoph Heemann (In Camera, Mirror), Raymond Dijkstra (Asra, La Poupée…), Frederik Croene, Kris Vanderstraeten, Bart De Paepe (Ilta Hämärä).

Member of the group Onde, formed together with Greg Jacobs and Marc Wroblewski (both from Noise Maker’s Fifes) and occasional live guest with Nurse With Wound.

Van Luijk’s photography, collage and print work radiates a dismal mood with reflections of pictoralism, symbolism and surrealism.

An appearing constant is a profound attraction to an irrational, organic and delicate stilled world, observed through antique lenses, a fin de siècle aura, faded through erosion of time.

Timo van Luijk also runs Metaphon, a concert organisation (till 2012) and record label releasing archive works of experimental music composers and sound artists like Arsène Souffriau, Baudouin Oosterlynck, Michael Ranta. Timo van Luijk Homepage

HAN BENNINK ~ TIGER RAG

10″
Original Artwork by Han Bennink
Numbered & signed edition of 25 ex.
d’or046
SOLD

In collaboration with Astres d’Or, Han Bennink has made an edition of 10″ vinyls, 25 copies.
The leitmotiv is the jazz standard the Tiger Rag of which several jazz musicians claim the copyrights, so it is not known who the actual author is.
Most likely it is an old New Orleans traditional.
The Tiger Rag has been performed and recorded through a role in the pianola from the Le Brocope theater in Oldeberkoop, Friesland. The role is played by Ferrante and Teicher as stated on it. The big question is whether or not musicians with these names were specially sought to give the title extra strength.
Han did that for the recording by improvisingly adding all kinds of percussive elements and to continue with that even on the other side of the 10″.

In 1967 the first album was released on the ICP label of the New Acoustic Swing Duo, consisting of Han Bennink and Willem Breuker. To save costs Han made all covers of the first and second edition, a total of 3000 pieces, by hand.
Costs NLG 10.00 + NLG 1.00 shipping costs.
Now, 53 years later, it is a difficult to obtain and precious collector’s item in which music and visual art are so intertwined.
Han subsequently fitted almost all ICP covers, and many others, with a front, but no longer by hand of course. A booklet of this was published in 2008 by Uitgeverij Huis Clos in an edition of 750 copies that was sold out in no time. In 2009 a reprint was released with a new title page and a number of covers added. 500 pieces numbered and signed. Also sold out immediately.
This was released again in 2015 with appendix 2009-2014.

When Raymond Dijkstra approached Han with the request to make a series in which music and image come together, he did not have to think long about it.
Fantastic to make another LP, but then a small one, after 53 years, in a hand-cut edition of 25 pieces and to design it all by yourself.

The fact that the recordings made in 1967 in the Netherlands with Sonny Rollins are also released this year is a wonderful combination of circumstances and makes the circle even more beautiful.

Tiger Rag by Louis Armstrong was the first record Han Bennink received from his father…

Han Bennink

Born in 1942 in Zaandam as the son of Anna Melk and Rein Bennink. Brother Peter followed in 1945. Moved to Hilversum in 1954, where Rein got a permanent job at broadcasting as a percussionist with the Zaaiers and the Cosmopolitain Orchestra. Anna became politically active there as a municipal councilor for the PSP.

At the age of five, Han started drumming on a kitchen chair. His father later gave him better material and converted the attic as a play area and studio for him. When he got tired of playing drums he started drawing and painting and vice versa. Always busy. He was also skilled in sailing and hockey.

He made his first recording with his father on clarinet in the AVRO studio, released on a 78 rpm record, edition 1 piece. He also played with his father wherever the opportunity arose, even at the army base of La Coutine in France, while he managed to escape military service with a hefty S5 (Note Astres d’Or: S5 is a health classification for the Dutch army (S5 means that one has achieved the lowest score on mental stability.)).

He soon went his own way as a drummer, played with the Pim Jacobs Trio, with Johnny Griffin and started the collaboration with Willem Breuker and Misha Mengelberg, from which the Instant Composers Pool (ICP) was created in 1967, with which Han still plays at home and abroad. abroad. Han played with Wes Montgomery, Eric Dolphy, Sonny Rollins, Nina Simone, Peter Brötzman, André van Duin, Percy Sledge, Dexter Gordon, Rita Corita, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Anneke Grönlo, Steve Lacy, Cecil Taylor, Pat Metheny, Piet Noordijk, Ray Anderson, Terrie Ex, Louis van Dijk, Uri Caine and many others.

At the same time Han studied at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam, the current Rietveld Academy, where he graduated cum laude as a graphic artist in 1964. At the graduation ceremony, director Dirk Vis declared Han the best drummer among graphic artists and the best graphic artist among drummers. That statement does not seem to have lost its relevance.
Han makes objects, assemblages and collages from mostly found objects. The only painter’s material Han uses is paper, pens, pencils, stamps, ink and watercolor for his drawings and arrangements.
Han designs the sleeves for LPs and CDs for his recordings. The original copies of the first ICP LP have since become valuable collector’s items.
Han has exhibited in numerous museums and galleries, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Het Goois Museum in Hilversum, the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague, The Design Museum in London, Akademie der Künste in Berlin, Museum Bevédère in Oranjewoud and Museum Kranenburgh in Bergen.

Han designed various trophies for Sena, the rights organization for performing artists: in 2017 the ‘Gouden Slifje’ trophy for the young most promising jazz drummer of the year, ‘De Gouden Notenkraker’ in 2018 for leading musicians or ensembles and the ‘Humble Hero Award’ 2019 and 2020 for the often invisible session musician who has left his mark.

Han himself won the Wessel Ilcken prize, predecessor of the Boy Edgar prize, the European Jazz Prize, Kunstpreis der Stadt Berlin, Bird Award Norths Sea Jazz Festival, Lifetime Achievement Award Cairo Jazz Festival, the Skoda Jazz Award Jazz Ahead Bremen and an Edison for the ICP Complete Boxed Catalog.

Two documentaries have been made about Han, “The Bearded” by Trino Flothuis and “Hazard Time” by Jelly Dekker. Erik van den Berg wrote his biography ‘De Wereld als Trommel’ and Irma Boom designed the book about and with his visual art ‘HANBENnInK’.

Besides the ICP orchestra, Han is part of the duo with clarinetist Joris Roelofs, the duo with pianist Guus Janssen, the ICP trio with Wolter Wierbos and Ernst Glerum, The Quartet.NL with Peter Beets, Ernst Glerum and Benjamin Herman, has his own Han Bennink Trio with pianist Simon Toldam and clarinetist Joachim Badenhorst and now plays with the third generation of jazz musicians.

Han still combines music and visual art. During the periods when he is free from music and does not have to go out, new ideas are always sprouting and assemblages are put together and new covers are designed.

THE TACTILE EQUATION

LP
Original Artwork
Numbered & signed edition of 25 ex.
d’or043

A thin belly. A belly of fine powder and as in a picture. At the foot of the belly, a burst grenade.
The grenade deploys a flaky circulation which rises in tongues of fire, a cold fire.
The circulation takes the belly and turns it over. But the belly does not rotate.
They are veins of vinous blood, of blood mixed with saffron and sulfur, but of a sulfur sweetened with water.
Above the belly breasts are visible. And higher, and more deep, but on another plane of the mind, a sun burns, but in such a way that it is thought that it is the breast that is burning. And at the foot of the grenade, a bird.
The sun is like a gaze. But a gaze that seems to gaze at the sun. The gaze is a cone that spills over at the sun. And all the air is like frozen music, but vast, profound music, well built and secret, and full of icy ramifications.
And all this, put together with columns, and a kind of architect’s drawing which connects the stomach with reality.
The canvas is hollow and multi-layered. The painting is well enclosed in the canvas. It is like a closed circle, a sort of abyss which turns, and doubles in the middle. It is like a spirit that sees itself and hollows itself out, it is malaxed and worked endlessly by the clenched hands of the spirit. However, the spirit sows its phosphor.
The mind is safe. He stands well with a foot in the world. The pomegranate, the belly, the breasts are like witness testimonies of reality. There is a dead bird, there’s a bud out of columns. The air is full of pencil strokes, pencil strokes like knife strokes, like streaks of a magic nail. The air has returned sufficiently.
And here he disposes himself in cells where grows a seed of unreality. The cells are each placed in their place, spreading
around the belly, in front of the sun, beyond the bird, and around this circulation of sulfur water.
But the architecture is indifferent to the cells, it sustains and does not speak.
Each cell carries an egg, where shines which germ? In each cell an egg is suddenly born. In each there is an inhuman but clear swarming, the stratifications of a fixed universe.
Each cell carries its egg well and offers it to us; but it matters little to the egg to be chosen or rejected.
Not all cells carry eggs. In some, a spiral is born. And in the air a bigger spiral hangs, but as sulfurous as if already of phosphor and enveloped in unreality. And this spiral has all the importance of the most powerful thought.
The belly evokes surgery and the Morgue, building site, public square and operating table. The corpse of the belly appears to be made of granite, or marble, or plaster, but than hardened plaster. There is a case for a mountain. The foam of the sky makes the mountain a ring, translucent and fresh. The air around the mountain is sonorous, pious, legendary, forbidden. Access to the mountain is prohibited. The mountain has its place in the soul. She is the horizon of something that is constantly receding. She gives the sensation of the eternal horizon.
In this, I feel my thought unfold as in an ideal, absolute space, but a space that would have a form which can be introduced into reality.

I fall from the sky.

And each of my fibers opens and finds their place in their designated boxes. I go back up to it as at my source.

De Merel. 14 Expressionist Music Pieces by Raymond Dijkstra

Raymond Dijkstra is an artist active since 1987 in music, sculpture, painting, photography, collage and drawing.
Founding member of Asra, La Poupée Vivante (with Timo van Luijk), Wendingen 1918 (with Bart de Paepe). He has collaborated with Frédérique Bruyas, Jon Mueller, The New Blockaders among others. RD is an autodidact who believes strongly art should be derived from worldly experiences and can’t be learned at school. The basis of the art lies in non knowledge, from which roads are chosen and lessons learned. Teachings came from life, alienation, dreams… Dijkstra has a discography of approximately 150 titles. His work shows a high degree of DIY in the sense that he has taught himself music ‘along the way’ while opening doors within himself. He has outed his music mostly through self-raised music and art publishing platforms like Le Souffleur (2003-current) and Astres d’Or (2017-current). The vinyl-records of this publication are hand-cut by RD himself.
As a visual artist, Dijkstra works in the field of painting, drawing, photography, collage, sculpture and objects. He currently works under the name Rayastre for his visual work as well for some of his audiowork.
